I tried many variations of rebooting, unplugging cables, etc. It would not prompt me to format it. And of course when I called tech support (the first level support) they said this box does not have that capability due to copyright issues (which I'm not sure why that would be). But I see many forum posts where an external drive can be used with the 8240HDC. And, I went into a Cox store yesterday and they said it can work but it needs to be the Western Digital My AV DVR Expander. Typical conflicting messages when dealing with Cox. I'm going to call the Tech Support service to get a better answer, but I'd still like someone from Cox to address this forum post.
